The Phospholipid Membrane

Cell membranes consist of a phospholipid bilayer in which lipophilic fatty acid esters (palmitic and oleic acid) are bound to choline residues via phosphate bridges.

Polymerization of such units leads to the formation of lipid layers which separate the aqueous compartments of the cytoplasm from the outside of the cell.
