Neutral, Proteinogenic Amino Acids

These amino acids have side chains that contain neither acidic nor basic substituents. Their isoelectric point lies in the "neutral" area (pH 5.5 - 7.5)

These amino acids are divided into two groups, depending on the polarity of the substituents of their side groups:

Glycine

Alanine

Valine

Serine

Threonine

Cysteine

Leucine

Isoleucine

Phenylalanine

Aspargine

Glutamine

Tyrosine

Proline

Methionine

Tryptophane

Nonpolar, neutral amino acids are important components of hydrophobic protein domains.

Polar, neutral amino acids are often involved in the adoption of the quarternary structure of proteins (hydrogen bonds).
