Neutral, Proteinogenic Amino Acids
These amino acids have side chains that contain neither acidic nor basic substituents. Their isoelectric point lies in the "neutral" area (pH 5.5 - 7.5)
These amino acids are divided into two groups, depending on the polarity of the substituents of their side groups:
Nonpolar, neutral amino acids are important components of hydrophobic protein domains. |
Polar, neutral amino acids are often involved in the adoption of the quarternary structure of proteins (hydrogen bonds). |
