Platinum, in the form of diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cisplatin), is used as an extremely effective pharmaceutical to treat a variety of cancer forms.

The metal complex interferes with cell division by coordinating to DNA. It thus prevents the growth of malignant tissue.

Since cisplatin causes a number of negative side effects, more easily tolerated derivatives were synthesized and are still being investigated.
