Nitrite Reductase - Iron and Copper Centers Carry out the Same Role
Physiologically, the nitrate ion is reduced in a stepwise manner, making the intermediates nitrite, NO and N2O important. Nitrite reduction can occur at either a haem iron center or in a copper containing enzyme (trimer with two neighbouring Cu atoms per unit).
