Tunichrome B-1 - a Ligand System with a high Affinity for Vanadium

Certain marine animals, for example sea squirts of the tunicate family, can accumulate vanadium in their blood. The degree of accumulationn is extremly high (a factor of ca. 107 with regard to the V concentration in sea water) and is produced by special ligand systems.

The exact function of the metals in these organisms as well as the structures of the complexes remain a point of discussion.
