Certain marine animals, for example sea squirts of the tunicate family, can accumulate vanadium in their blood. The degree of accumulationn is extremly high (a factor of ca. 10⁷ with regard to the V concentration in sea water) and is produced by special ligand systems.

The exact function of the metals in these organisms as well as the structures of the complexes remain a point of discussion.
