Enterobactin - a Siderophore
Enterobactin is a siderophore, which is produced by bacteria and used to transport iron. Unlike the hydroxamates, which are used by fungi for the same function, they form negatively charged complexes.
Fe(III) complexes with enterobactin have a very high formation constant (K > 1052) and can only be released through specific, pH-dependent redox mechanisms.
