Phosphorus

Phosphorus is central to all forms of life. Phophates are integral to DNA, RNA, cell membranes and skeletal material.

Hydrolysis reactions of oligophosphates (ADP, ATP) are essential for intracellular energy storage and energy availability.

In addition, phophates participate directly or indirectly in the function of a large number of enzymes.

Phosphates are biologically relevant for:

  •   all energy transformations in living cells
  •   the structure and function of genetic material
  •   the structure and function of phospholipid membranes
  •   the signal transfer by glucophosphate or inositoltriphosphate
  •   the structure of matrix substances (bones, dental enamel)
